With the Summer in full swing, the girls at Beulah have been making the most of the long summer days – planning their holiday ‘escapes’ from London as well as enjoying long weekend getaways.
This week we begin a new series of blogs, sharing an ‘insiders guide’ to the holiday locations of the Beulah Team, and their essential packing list!
First up, Sophia, our new Marketing & Sales manager tells us about her recent trip to Biarritz…
Described as an ‘elegant seaside town’ on southwestern France’s Basque coast, Biarritz has been a popular resort since European royalty began visiting in the 1800s. A major surfing destination, its beaches host surf schools and annual international competitions. A busy nightlife scene encompasses late-night bars, clubs and a grand beachside casino, the Barrière.
What drew you to Biarritz?
S: An old university friend was getting married there but i’ve always wanted to go for the surfers, beaches and delicious Basque cuisine. It did not disappoint. The food is fantastic, lots of fresh fish and tapas-style dishes
Where to stay…?
S: We stayed at the Hotel L’Ocean which is one of Biarritz oldest hotels and perfectly located right by the beach, above the fishing port and next to a pretty square called place Sainte Eugenie. It is a 2 minute walk to the beach where there’s a long promenade you can meander along.
What are your ‘Must Pack’ holiday items….?
S: The ‘Juliet’ dress (a favourite!), because it’s so light to pack and you can easily dress it up or down. I also took the ‘Ava’ shirt which worked perfectly with jeans, shorts and skirts whilst I was there. For sunglasses I always rely on Linda Farrow as I love her retro designs. My jewellery tends to be anything from YSL or vintage markets, the chunkier the better. I like to keep my scent simple and natural, especially in the summer, so I usually opt for Evening Rose by Aerin Lauder. Summer sandals are an essential item and this pair from my favourite shoe designer Aquazzura have been so useful because they are unusual, but stylish. Last but not least, I always pack a Beulah scarf for the evenings or shield my skin from the sun. My favourite print from the SS15 collection is ‘Flower Spirits’ which is simply gorgeous as it’s so colorful that it brightens up any outfit.
Something every visitor must see/do…?
S: You cannot leave Biarritz without visiting The Basque Coast, which is the surfers beach. Accessible by the viewpoint or sea during the day, it offers the most incredible sunsets and views of the coast by evening. Port des Pêcheurs “Port Vieux “ is a picturesque old fishing port, it is home to the crampottes, the port fishermen’s little huts, and has several restaurants for you to enjoy seafood and special grilled dishes. I would also recommend hiring a car and getting out into the beautiful countryside of the Basque region as there’s something very special about the scenery there with the rolling hills and lush green landscape.
Best way to spend an afternoon….?
S: The beach! I’m an advocate for maximizing tanning-time whenever, wherever!
Best local dish…?
S: I’d recommend trying the Marmitako fish stew as Biarritz is right by the coast so their fish dishes are very fresh. For tapas style dishes opt for pintxo’s with Tolosabean, padron peppers and Idiazabal sheep’s cheese. Enjoy with glass of local Basque cider!
Best place to shop…?
S: If you like everything under one roof, Galleries Lafayettes has a miniature version of their Paris megastore in Biarritz, however, if you prefer to find unique local shops have a wander down Rue Mazagran.
Would you return…?
S: Yes I would but I would get out of town and rent a villa with a few friends in the Basque countryside as the region is so beautiful and relaxing.
