25th September 2015 – My Kind of Holiday – Nats in Croatia

With the Summer in full swing, the girls at Beulah have been making the most of the long summer days – planning their holiday ‘escapes’ from London as well as enjoying long weekend getaways.

This week, Natasha, Beulah Co-Founder, shares her recent trip to Croatia…

What drew you to Croatia?

I had visited Croatia 10 years ago with a great friend. I loved hopping on boats around the different Islands, and the food was seriously good!

Where to stay?

In Dubrovnik we stayed at a friend’s villa on the island which was idyllic. There are some beautiful villas dotted around the coast, which I think is the best way to spend a holiday

What are your must pack holiday items?

My beulah blue heart canvas bag is a must! It’s perfect to take to the beach and when out and about. I also love the red Juliet dress which is such a stunning dress to take on holiday as it’s light weight, silk and looks gorgeous in the evening.

‘Juliet’ Dress in Flower Spirits Red
Silk Chiffon Scarf – Available in the same print – £120
Natasha’s Summer Essentials : Heidi Klum Swim Wear, Mint & Rose Shoes, Jo Loves Perfume, Sisley SPF 30, Ralph Lauren Sunglasses, Beulah Scarf

Something every visitor must see/do?

You must visit Korcula, an Island off Dubrovnik. In the old town there are beautiful boutiques where you can find old antique jewellery.

Best way to spend an afternoon?

Take a small boat out on the sea. We would explore different islands, and chose the coves which had the clearest blue water, anchor it and dive off into the sea. We’d take an ice box and have champagne in the sunset – it was heaven!

Best local dish?

Fresh fish with lots of garlic, and butter! The food is so simple, yet so delicious and healthy. I wish I could eat there every day!

Best place to shop?

Korcula had beautiful shops and boutiques in the old town

Would you return?

Yes! I’d love to take my baby (Georgia) once she’s a bit older

This season at Beulah we have been inspired by the concept of the ‘chrysalis’. This is the metamorphosis of the butterfly, from pupa to chrysalis to winged beauty. It represents the transformation of the trafficked women helped by the Beulah Trust. The collection is about the journey from darkness into light. Each print has been hand painted in-house from these initial beautiful watercolour inspiration sketches to reveal the intricate detail of the butterflies’ wing.

Beulah drawing 1Beulah drawing 2Beulah drawing 3The colour palette is autumnal with deep evergreens, renaissance reds and inky blues.  Ice blues and shimmering oyster soften these bold tones.

Beulah fabricWith a focus on separates, delicate patterns combined with contrast paneling and pleats create flattering, modern silhouettes.

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 12.30.20The collection in itself is also a metamorphosis, the mood boards inspired the patterned sketches that are translated into fashion.

Screen Shot 2015-09-15 at 12.23.15The Serena dress is in the Fluttering Wings print in ink blue.  It is a fusion of modern elegance with Italian inspired style details crafted from swathes of weightless silk-chiffon with feminine detailing to accentuate the sensuous movement of the fabric.

The Evie top is in Inflorescent Wings Heron Print, light and loose fitting silk tee is a wardrobe classic perfect for layering.  It is paired with our Evelyn cigarette trousers in navy that embody Beulah’s sleekly tailored aesthetic.

The Ivy is a stunning full length printed silk chiffon skirt designed with two front splits to emphasise the fluid silhouette.  The full skirt paired with a narrow waistband is glamorous when you move as the detail of the Fluttering Wings print is revealed.  It is paired with the sheer Martha blouse in the same print for an evening ensemble.

13th August 2015 – My Kind of Holiday – Japan & South Korea

With the Summer in full swing, the girls at Beulah have been making the most of the long summer days – planning their holiday ‘escapes’ from London as well as enjoying long weekend getaways. This week, we ask Caroline about her recent trip to Japan and South Korea….

Caroline Barulis

What is your role at Beulah?

C: Head Creative Pattern Cutter

How long have you been at Beulah?

C: 2 years

Caroline’s current Beulah favourites – The Radiance Tee and Veil Skirt

What drew you to Japan/Korea?

C: It was a dream trip that I’ve been wanting to go on for about 20 years. I love the culture of Japan & my husband wanted to see the new technology of South Korea

IMG_5962Where to stay..?

C: In South Korea we stayed in the city centre Seoul in Myeong-Dong & Gangnam districts which are full of life. In Japan we stayed in Tokyo in the district of Shinjuku although travelled to see every district which were full of lights, noise, food and a general overload of every sensor! We also travelled to Mount Fuji and stayed nearby in Hakone. Then later on to Kyoto, the original capital where we stayed in the geisha capital Gion which is bursting with culture and beautiful landscapes and then onto Osaka further west.

What are you must pack holiday items…?

C: My absolute must is my Beulah blue heart canvas bag which goes with me everywhere! It’s great for market shopping, the beach and even as hand luggage! It hold everything. I also love my Sabitri dress that wins for any occasion. You never know when you have to dress up for that special event and the Sabitri ticks all the boxes!

Something ever vistor must see/do?

C: When you’re in Tokyo you must visit The Tsukiji Fish Market to try out and taste some of the world’s tastiest & freshest sushi made right before your eyes! The Meiji Shrine in Tokyo was also breath taking! In Kyoto visit Gion the geisha district and walk around the cobbled streets to spot them walking around 4pm every day.

Best way to spend an afternoon?

C: If it’s a sunny day spend the afternoon lazing around in Shinjuku Gyoen National Park which is a free park full of stunning Japanese gardens and lakes with indoor tropical gardens too. Or the Meiji shrine nearby! If it’s a rainy day (it rains a lot in Tokyo) visit the amazing shopping districts in Tokyo and a must is visiting Takeshita Dori Street which is very busy with teenage fashion and culture. A very interesting place to people watch!

Best local dish?

C: In Kyoto there is an amazing little eating hole called Chao Chao which an amazing Gyoza dumpling restaurant!! And you can’t go there and not try the local fresh sushi!!

Best place to shop?

C: Omotesando Hills in Shibuya district is a great little area of coffee shops & boutiques behind the main shopping street where you’ll find some amazing finds!

Would you return?

C: It’s not a very relaxing holiday, more of an experience! It certainly has a massive tick on my bucket list and what an amazing experience it’s been! I’m glad I went for sure but I might opt for a beach resort next year!

July 2nd to October 18th the National Portrait Gallery are exhibiting, Audrey Hepburn Portraits of an Icon. The exhibition illustrates the life of one of the world’s most recognisable actresses, stars and fashion icons. Alongside images from her post film career including a UNICEF ambassadorship and her presidential medal, plus her childhood years too.

Hepburn is known and loved for her effortless, elegant, chic and refined style. A way of dressing that is synonymous with the clothes and pieces that you will find both online and in store with us at Beulah.

We have created an Audrey Hepburn inspired edit of our favourite Beulah pieces. Taking inspiration from her early years as a Hollywood starlet with a chic Parisian style, to help you inject a little of that Audrey look into your wardrobe whatever the season or occasion.

Even on a casual day Audrey’s style is still classic, sophisticated and refined. Our Cleo navy trousers paired with our silk Radiance Tee in Ivory embody that chic but simple look that Audrey epitomised on her days off.

Hepburn is often considered the embodiment of the classic 50’s style. If you want to take a more modern approach to this look our Tulip dress in dusky pink gives a similarly structured style with a strong tulip skirt without the classic volume. If a more traditional take on the iconic 50’s look is what you’re after, our Veil skirt in blush pink allows for a striking yet refined outfit with all the volume that a 1950’s skirt is famous for. But this is paired with the more contemporary blush pink colour for the modern woman.

Audrey loved a classic structured style, and if this is something that you love too then our Elina dress is perfect. This dress comes in both mint and light pink, and is lightly structured for a more contemporary update but still contains the lady like feel that Audrey exuded. Elina is also a great piece to transition from day to night, wear it like Audrey in the day with flats and sunglasses or in the evening with heels and a dainty clutch bag.

If a more fun and girlie Hepburn look is what inspires you, our Ines dress in dusty pink is exactly what you need. The pink colouring embodies Audrey’s timeless femininity and the notch neck brings a subtle modernity to the look. Ines is fitted, slightly moving away from the traditional look that Hepburn championed but still bringing her fun, cute style to any outfit.

For a Hepburn evening wear look our Painted Lady gown in navy is a perfect match, full of the classic elegance that Audrey always carried. The darker colour palette of the dresses again emphasises the sophistication of both Hepburn and our Painted Lady gown, amazing for any evening or formal event.

‘Portraits of an Icon’ ends October 18th 2015 – you don’t want to miss this one!

6th August 2015 – My Kind of Holiday – Biarritz

With the Summer in full swing, the girls at Beulah have been making the most of the long summer days – planning their holiday ‘escapes’ from London as well as enjoying long weekend getaways.

This week we begin a new series of blogs, sharing an ‘insiders guide’ to the holiday locations of the Beulah Team, and their essential packing list!

First up, Sophia, our new Marketing & Sales manager tells us about her recent trip to Biarritz…

Described as an ‘elegant seaside town’ on southwestern France’s Basque coast, Biarritz has been a popular resort since European royalty began visiting in the 1800s. A major surfing destination, its beaches host surf schools and annual international competitions. A busy nightlife scene encompasses late-night bars, clubs and a grand beachside casino, the Barrière.

internet1What drew you to Biarritz?

S: An old university friend was getting married there but i’ve always wanted to go for the surfers, beaches and delicious Basque cuisine. It did not disappoint. The food is fantastic, lots of fresh fish and tapas-style dishes

Where to stay…?

S: We stayed at the Hotel L’Ocean which is one of Biarritz oldest hotels and perfectly located right by the beach, above the fishing port and next to a pretty square called place Sainte Eugenie. It is a 2 minute walk to the beach where there’s a long promenade you can meander along.

What are your ‘Must Pack’ holiday items….?

S: The Juliet’ dress (a favourite!), because its so light to pack and you can easily dress it up or down. I also took the ‘Ava’ shirt which worked perfectly with jeans, shorts and skirts whilst I was there. For sunglasses I always rely on Linda Farrow as I love her retro designs. My jewellery tends to be anything from YSL or vintage markets, the chunkier the better. I like to keep my scent simple and natural, especially in the summer, so I usually opt for EveningRose by Aerin Lauder. Summer sandals are an essential item and this pair from my favourite shoe designer Aquazzura have been so useful because they are unusual, but stylish. Last but not least, I always pack a Beulah scarf for the evenings or shield my skin from the sun. My favourite print from the SS15 collection is ‘Flower Spirits’ which is simply gorgeous as its so colorful that it brightens up any outfit.

Something every visitor must see/do…?

S: You cannot leave Biarritz without visiting The Basque Coast, which is the surfers beach. Accessible by the viewpoint or sea during the day, it offers the most incredible sunsets and views of the coast by evening. Port des Pêcheurs “Port Vieux “ is a picturesque old fishing port, it is home to the crampottes, the port fishermen’s little huts, and has several restaurants for you to enjoy seafood and special grilled dishes. I would also recommend hiring a car and getting out into the beautiful countryside of the Basque region as there’s something very special about the scenery there with the rolling hills and lush green landscape.

Best way to spend an afternoon.?

S: The beach! Im an advocate for maximizing tanning-time whenever, wherever!

Best local dish…?

S: I’d recommend trying the Marmitako fish stew as Biarritz is right by the coast so their fish dishes are very fresh. For tapas style dishes opt for pintxo’s with Tolosabean, padron peppers and Idiazabal sheep’s cheese. Enjoy with glass of local Basque cider!

Best place to shop…?

S: If you like everything under one roof, Galleries Lafayettes has a miniature version of their Paris megastore in Biarritz, however, if you prefer to find unique local shops have a wander down Rue Mazagran.

Would you return…?

S: Yes I would but I would get out of town and rent a villa with a few friends in the Basque countryside as the region is so beautiful and relaxing.
